Best Foot Forward - Week 5: Advancing Women in the Workplace
Treasa Fitzgibbon and Nicole Meyer co-hosted a 6-week Career Navigation Series in the Fall of 2020. Series attendees identified their strengths, wrote an impactful resume, and learned how to interview. Treasa and Nicole also gave advice for optimizing performance in any position including how to position yourself for promotion, how to advance women in the workplace, and moving into taking action to fully control their careers.
The fifth week of Nicole and Treasa’s series was the most interactive.
Being primarily a group of women, many participants shared their own experiences with the gender biases that exist in today’s workforce and asked for advice on how to react to it. While there is no “one size fits all” solution to this problem, identifying biases as they occur in real-time help to make sure they do not become a repeat occurrence.
Advocating for yourself or on behalf of another person is one of the best ways to correct inappropriate behavior. In many cases, biases in the workplace are unconscious, so coming from a place of positivity often helps to smooth over these sorts of situations. Holding yourself accountable and leading by example is another way to have a positive impact.
If you are in a position of authority or seniority, mentoring someone from a marginalized group to help them get ahead is a wonderful place to start. Similarly, taking ownership of your own behavior and apologizing or making reparations are good ways to have a positive impact on company culture.
